Lakeshore Innovation Grants
Awards for 2007/08

The Lakeshore Excellence Foundation (LEF) Innovation Grant Committee selected 12 applicants out of 31 received, awarding a total of $20,008.11. The grants are awarded annually to teachers and staff of the Lakeshore Public Schools for innovative projects that supplement the curriculum. The Foundation has awarded a total of  $80,431.11 for 97 grants since its inception in 1998.

  1. TOM WOODRUFF’S GREAT LAKES ILLUSTRATED WORKSHOP
    The goal is the reinforcement of the Social Studies curriculum through the Arts in hands-on illustration workshops.

  1. LIVE STRONG ACADEMY
    This project is to enhance self-esteem of girls ages 8-12 within a 12 week program focusing on the care and keeping of their mind, body and character.

  1. FP3 DIGITAL PLAYER
    Students will use the players as part of a literacy program. The goal is to expand their vocabulary by listening to stories and songs.

  1. POND AND LAND ECOCOLUMNS
    Students will pond and land ecocolumns using actual soil, seeds, water and living animals.

  1. FIELD TRIP TO SHEDD AQUARIUM IN CHICAGO
    The goal is to support the science curriculum covering ecosystems, animal interactions and analyzing the effect of changing communities and populations over a period of time.

  1. INTERACTIVE “SMART BOARD”
    This project is an interactive white board, classroom management software and pen display. 390 students will be impacted by this program and hundreds more in the future.

  1. GRAPHIC TABLET COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY
    This technology will provide a more realistic world environment for the graphic design class. Students produce 90% of their work from the curriculum on the computer and this technology will provide more control, as pen on a flat surface, to draw images which appear on screen.

  1. UPDATE GREENHOUSE/STUDY PLANT GENETICS
    The main goal of this project is to help students understand genetics by having them observe 3 generations of plants that they grow as they attempt to unravel the mystery of paternity.

  1. WRITER FUSION
    The main goal of this program is to help students who have a learning disability in writing. This technology tool will enable students to “hear” what they are writing besides “seeing” it with the goal of supporting students in writing in all of their classes.

  1. JUMP RHYTHM/JAZZ
    The main goal is to offer students the opportunity to train with outside professionals for a one week period setting choreography in preparation for the Spring Dance Concert and to hold technique classes for all levels.

  1. WRITING CENTER
    The writing center is a place where students can go to receive one-on-one writing guidance from a peer consultant. The main goal is to help students become better writers and prepare them for competency tests throughout their high school years.

  1. DIGITAL CAMERA
    The goal of this camera will improve photography for the Driftwood (yearbook) with a Nikon 10.2 MP SLR camera with flash. This camera will allow students to take action shots and photograph in the darkened auditorium.
